13-8 Stainless Steel Forgings
Great Lakes Forge offers the industry's best lead times for 13-8 Mo stainless steel forgings. We can create custom forgings from steel in sizes up to 12' in length, from 2.5" to 24" in diameter/thickness, and weighing up to 4,000 lbs. With the industry's fastest turnaround times, our stainless steel forging service is ideal for high or low volume production, as well as prototyping.
To accommodate your project's specific requirements, we can produce custom forgings in a wide variety of shapes. These include blocks, rectangles, flats, plates, rounds, discs, sleeves, hubs, spindles, stepshafts, sheets, and flat, square and round bars, as well as unique custom geometries.
Our in-house machine shop, testing capabilities, and quality-controlled heat-treating processes guarantee the consistency, quality, and dimensional accuracy of forged alloy 13-8 parts. We also offer numerous milling and rough turning capabilities to deliver products that are close to intended size and shape at reasonable cost.
Stainless Steel Grade 13-8 Properties
Stainless steel grade 13-8 is a martensitic precipitation age-hardening material with many useful characteristics. The material's closely controlled chemical composition and microstructure give it a higher level of useful mechanical properties under severe environmental conditions than other ferrous metals can provide.
Beneficial properties of alloy 13-8 steel include:
- High strength
- High hardness
- High fatigue strength
- Good galling and stress corrosion resistance
- Exceptional oxidation resistance at temperatures up to 1,100°F (593°C)
- Excellent corrosion resistance (comparable to chromium nickel grades)
Forged 13-8 Mo Stainless Steel Shapes
- Flat bars
- Round bars
- Square bars
- Blocks
- Discs
- Flats
- Hubs
- Plates
- Rectangles
- Rounds

- Other unique custom geometries
In addition to 13-8 forgings, we have the capabilities to produce custom forgings from over 100 different materials. If your project requires a specific type or grade of steel, please don't hesitate to contact us. The material you need may be in our inventory, and if it isn't, close relationships with our material providers enable us to procure the material you need quickly and cost-effectively.

Stainless Steel Grade 13-8 Mo Hardness
Tempered 13-8 stainless steel can achieve Brinell scale hardness of up to 430, and Rockwell hardness of up to C45.
Alloy 13-8 Stainless Steel Heat Treatment
13-8 Mo steel can be hardened through solution heat treatment at temperatures from 950°F to 1,150°F (510°C to 621°C) for four hours. It must be air cooled to below 60°F (16°C) to allow for complete martensite transformation.
13-8 Mo Stainless Steel Machinability
Cutting speed of 13-8 stainless steel averages 80 ft/min, similar to 17-4 stainless. Machinability of age-hardened 13-8 stainless steel improves in proportion to increases in hardening temperature.
13-8 Steel Hot Working Capabilities
Stainless steel grade 13-8 can be forged and hot-worked. The alloy should be solution-treated and cooled at room temperature.
Cold Working Alloy 13-8 Capacities
This alloy can be cold-worked. Fabrication is limited by its high initial yield strength.
