15-5 Stainless Steel Forgings

15-5 PH Stainless Steel

Great Lakes Forge is a leading provider of 15-5 stainless steel forgings. We provide custom 15-5 PH steel forgings with the industry's fastest lead times. We can create custom forgings up to 6,000 lbs., from 2.5" to 24" in diameter/thickness, and up to 12' in length. Forging is ideal for long or short run production, as well as prototyping.

Forgeable shapes include flat, square or round bars, blocks, rectangles, flats, rounds, discs, sleeves, sheets, hubs, spindles, stepshafts, and plates, as well as other custom geometries.

We offer numerous milling and rough turning capabilities to bring 15-5 stainless steel forgings closer to desired size and shape at reasonable cost. Our in-house machine shop, quality-controlled heat-treating processes, and testing capabilities ensure quality, consistency, and dimensional accuracy that matches your unique requirements.

15-5 PH Stainless Steel Properties

15-5 PH stainless steel is a martenistic precipitation hardening steel that offers high strength and high hardness. It offers corrosion resistance greater than that of straight chromium grades such as 410, and comparable to chromium nickel grades.

15-5 PH stainless steel offers excellent transverse notch toughness and ductility, and a very good uniformity of properties. It displays exceptional resistance to oxidation at high temperatures (up to 1,100°F/593°C). This material is chemically balanced to create an essentially ferrite-free microstructure, giving it a high degree of workability for forging.

15-5 PH Stainless Steel Composition

Element % Content
 Carbon  0.07 (max.)
 Chromium  14.00 to 15.50
 Columbium + Tantalum   0.15 to 0.45
 Copper  2.50 to 4.50
 Manganese  1.00 (max.)
 Nickel  3.50 to 5.50
 Phosphorous  0.040 (max.)
 Silicon  1.00 (max.)
 Sulfur  0.015 (max.)

15-5 Stainless Steel Hardness

Tempered 15-5 PH stainless steel can achieve Brinell scale hardness of up to 420, and Rockwell hardness of up to C40.

Heat Treating 15-5 PH Stainless Steel

15-5 stainless steel can be solution heat treated at approximately 1,900°F/1,038°C; it should be allowed to cool to below 90°F/32°C to allow for complete martensite transformation.

15-5 Stainless Steel Machinability

15-5 PH stainless steel machines easily, similarly to 304 stainless. Machinability improves with increased aging temperature. Cutting speed of annealed 15-5 stainless steel forgings averages 80 ft/min; carbide tools can increase this speed up to three times.
