Stainless Steel 15-5 PH Properties

15-5 PH stainless steel is a martensitic precipitation hardening steel that offers high strength and high hardness. It offers corrosion resistance greater than that of straight chromium grades such as 410, and comparable to chromium nickel grades.

15-5 PH stainless steel offers excellent transverse notch toughness and ductility, and a very good uniformity of properties. It displays exceptional resistance to oxidation at high temperatures (up to 1,100°F/593°C). This material is chemically balanced to create an essentially ferrite-free microstructure, giving it a high degree of workability for forging.

Stainless Steel 15-5 Grade Hardness

Tempered 15-5 PH stainless steel can achieve Brinell scale hardness of up to 420, and Rockwell hardness of up to C40.

Heat Treating 15-5 PH Alloy Stainless Steel

15-5 stainless steel can be solution heat treated at approximately 1,900°F/1,038°C; it should be allowed to cool to below 90°F/32°C to allow for complete martensite transformation.

Alloy 15-5 Stainless Steel Machinability

15-5 PH stainless steel machines easily, similarly to 304 stainless. Machinability improves with increased aging temperature. Cutting speed of annealed 15-5 stainless steel forgings averages 80 ft/min; carbide tools can increase this speed up to three times.
